Media totally drops coverage of Myanmar/Burma cyclone victims
Could it be that they are doing alright? Perhaps, after the initial deaths actually caused by the physical inpact of the cyclone, the Burmese adjusted and began to take care of themselves.
I remember the same media fervor displayed over earthquake "victims" in Afghanistan. Then the Afghans declined to starve to death or contract typhoid or cholera and showed a lack of interest in the donated clothes meant to keep them from freezing to death, as we had been lead to believe they would.
The media are always unhappy when third world peoples manage to survive tragedies without the help of western powers. It kind of goes against their vision of us being simultaneously oppressors and saviors.
She is knee deep in doo doo of her own making right now.
"Here's the story:
On the night of June 7, Edgerly - whose duties included overseeing the Police Department - showed up at a West Oakland liquor store just as her nephew's car was being towed by police as part of an operation against the Acorn gang.
The nephew, 27-year-old William Lovan - who works for the city as a parking meter repairman - had left the car running and locked the keys inside, along with a gun. Edgerly asked why the car was being towed and the police, in their fashion, said, "Because it's polluting the air."
Two sources familiar with the case tell us that Edgerly pulled out her cell phone and punched up Assistant Chief Howard Jordan's number to complain. Jordan said he'd check it out and call her back. And he did a few minutes later, telling her that the towing job was part of a bigger police operation.
Upon hearing the news, the sources say, Edgerly calmed down.
That might well have been the end of the story - except that according to our sources, police think Edgerly may have made a call to her nephew, warning him to stay away from these "bad people" because the authorities knew what they were up to. Authorities say the gang was linked to several homicides and a series of restaurant takeover robberies as well as carjackings, drug and weapons trafficking.
What we do know is that police, who had several suspects' phones tapped, say they have the nephew on tape calling the gang's alleged leader and telling him that he had word "from the top" that the cops were on the way."

A guy came here on Friday and went to the Director's office
and said that he had a gun. He was "angry with the disruptive behavior and noise of kids and teens " at his neighborhood branch.
Apparently this is an ongoing issue with him. The cops came and did a threat assessment on him and decided that he wasn't one.

We are strong like ox!
Years ago, right-wing co-worker took us to a Burmese restaurant he and his girlfriend really liked. He ordered, for us, soup made with coconut milk.
As the waitress lifted the lid of the soup tureen I saw a cockroach, sans life, curled atop the thick soup. I pointed it out to the waitress and she used the ladle to deftly scoop out the offending insect, whiped it on a napkin, then proceeded to use the same ladle to fill our small bowls with cockroach flavored soup, which we all ate without further ado.
I remembered this the other day and mentioned it to co-worker. "That was good soup," he said.
"It was, I agreed, and we lived to tell the tale."

From, War Journal, My Five Years In Iraq, by Richard Engel
"In mid April 2004, Sunni insurgents executed an Italian thirty-six-year-old security contractor, Fabrizio Quattrocchi. In his final moment- like Berg's, also videotaped- Quattrocchi faced the kidnappers. Struggling to his feet, he tried to tear off his hood as he yelled, "I'll show you how an Italian dies!" They shot him in the head. I have often wondered if I would be that brave."

Friday the 13th
Right-wing co-worker is good friends with a Mexican co-worker. He says the Mexican guy's entire family, from the grandparents to the little kids, love watching horror movies together.
"Wow," I said, what a nice family togetherness experience. The family that watches horror movies together, stays together."
"Well, as far as I can remember, he replied, neither Freddy nor Jason have ever killed a Mexican. They've killed Whites, Blacks and an Asian, but not a Mexican."
That must be why they like them so much, I said. They like to see all the gringos get killed. They are like, "Kewl, there goes another one."

What is it with the jackasses who want Sirhan, Sirhan set free
Some fool wrote this letter to the SF Chron suggesting a really kewl way to respect Bobby Kennedy's memory on the anniversary of his assassination. He wants to release Sirhan from prison. His premis of caring about the costs involved in the upkeep of Sirhan is a front for his real beliefs. People such as he do not care about the costs of incarcerating criminals, they care about murderers. No doubt he thinks Sirhan had jusification for his crime because he was an oppressed Palestinian. No doubt Mr Gallagher was an ardent supporter of the IRA too. Or maybe Miss C just stereotyping again.
Miss C, on the other hand, is happy to foot the bill for Sirhan's prison cafeteria prepared halal meals, and his Preparation H, until Allah sees fit to take him into paradise. Perhaps Mr Gallagher could stage an escape, that way Mr Gallagher and Sirhan can hold hands in paradise for eternity.
Miss C also takes leave to doubt that Sirhan could transition from prison to work easily. But then again, maybe he would open a kosher Deli called Sirhan's and all the confused lefties who hate themselves would flock there.
"Set Sirhan free
Editor - Forty years after the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, the only unanswered question should be: What taxpayer interest is being served by keeping Kennedy's killer, Sirhan Sirhan, now 64 years old, in prison?
However reprehensible Sirhan's actions were, why should the state's taxpayers continue to pay for his housing and medical care four decades later?
If Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is serious about tackling the bloated costs of our prison system, then he should grant clemency to Sirhan, who might already have been given an early release if his victim had not been a Kennedy."

On the way to work I pass by a laundromat
The guy who runs it (Right-wing co- worker calls him Poop Deck Pappy) feeds the birds and a stray cat that hang around the parking lot. Sometimes the cat doesn't eat the scrap of meat put in front of him. This irritates the night heron, who paces around trying to figure out ways to snatch the meat from under the cat. He thinks the cat is being wasteful. For some reason the heron is afraid of the cat, but the cat is totally oblivious to the danger of the heron's wicked beak. I think the cat would come out the loser in a battle with a heron.

Latino kids are uh, suicidal and take drugs because of the effects of attending segregated schools
According to an article in the SF Chronicle today,
"Experts were unable to come up with an explanation for why Latino behavior trends differed. However, they speculated that school environments many Latinos face may differ considerably from what adolescents of other races encounter. Earlier research found that Latino and black students more commonly attend highly segregated schools than white or Asian students.
"There's tremendous segregation in our schools," said Howell Wechsler, director of adolescent and school health for the CDC."
What is it about being with each other that makes them want to do drogas and kill themselves? Are they saying that going to school with a few Whites will make everything all right? Why do they always have to lay everything on us? Consider this, in Mexico, Mexicans really attend seriously segregated schools. So do the Chinese and the Indians and most people in the world. It does not seem to harm them in the least.
Anyway, why were they unable to come up with an explanation for such pathologies and what makes the so-called experts so expert in the first place?
The Democrats' nomination was not Hillary's to win, it was Al Gore's
It seems clear that some Democrats wanted a White candidate. Al Gore was that White candidate not Hillary. Had Al run againt Obama the race would have been over long ago. Blacks would have been the only people voting for Obama in a contest against Gore.
Here is what happened to one girl who refused her uncle's advances
"Karen Flores wrote in a school essay that she looked forward to her quinceañera this spring because "that day my dream will come true. That day my parents wake to see a little girl, but at the end of the night I will be a young lady."
On Monday, only weeks after her 15th-birthday celebration, Flores' life ended. Her uncle, Jose Manuel Landaverde, 40, shot the popular Roseland University Prep honor student in the neck with a shotgun at their west Santa Rosa home and then turned the gun on himself, police said.
Landaverde reportedly was "controlling" and upset about Flores' interest in boys, police said.
At about 4 p.m. Monday, Flores was with two siblings, ages 13 and 6, in the kitchen of the Dickens Drive home their family shared with Landaverde, police said.
He asked to talk with Flores privately in his room, Sgt. Lisa Banayat said, and she refused.
"Landaverde retrieved a shotgun from his bedroom, walked into the living room, and shot Flores in the neck," according to a police statement. "Landa-verde went into the kitchen and shot himself in the head. Both younger siblings were present during the shootings and ran to a neighbor's home for help."
Flores' grieving family gathered Tuesday at a home on Giffen Road near Stony Point Road.
"She was an intelligent, very intelligent, beautiful girl," Jose Luis Gutierrez, an uncle, said in Spanish.
Speaking of Landaverde he said, "He was in love with her."
Family and school friends recounted vague and sporadic conversations with Flores about Landaverde. Flores recently had told her cousin, Xiomara Hercules, that Landaverde had "pushed and pulled her."

Ahmadinejad claims Bush has been looking for reasons to attack Iran but has failed in his attempt to find any
I thought Bush was the kind of guy who didn't need a reason to attack a Muslim country. He is only too eager to do it without a legitimate reason. Isn't he famous for supposedly making up reasons to attack them? Bush could just say that Iran has Nuclear Weapons of Mass Destruction, if he wanted to attack. I, on the other hand, think that kicking a lot of fundamentalist Muslim ass is a good enough reason to bomb most Muslim countries.

Co-workers son's controversial artwork
Co-worker's son drew a picture of his arch enemy and classmate, Charlotte, being electrocuted by high "voltig."
His mistake was, he wrote her name above the skeleton, thought better of it, crossed it out, but then was unable to resist writing it again and doing such an incomplete job of crossing it out that he got busted by his teacher.
