The good old days before petro-chemicals

I am confused as to what exactly the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity disorder "sufferers" want exactly. They seem to decry the modern use of chemicals as heinous, but these are the best of times. Remember the good old days when we used lead based paints? When we had lead in our canned foods? When our canned fruit and juice tasted like the cans? When one orange was an extra special treat? When malaria was endemic to the southern US? Before DDT, when we had lice, fleas and bedbugs in our beds? When open sewage ran into lakes and rivers? When we drank polluted water? When the smell of the family bedpan disturbed every one's sleep? When we contracted bubonic plague and smallpox and polio and typhoid and tuberculosis? When vermin ran over us at night? When there were no antibiotics and even President's sons died from blisters and rich people's sons died from ear infections? When people rarely bathed? When doctors bled people and dosed them with deadly poisons like arsenic and mercury to cure venereal and other diseases, which our husbands often contracted from prostitutes and gave to us? When we burned coal as fuel for heat and cooking? When we had to boil meat because it was spoiled? When rural people burned their trash? When factories belched out toxic fumes? When entire families bathed in the same dirty bath water? When women died in childbirth? When the infant mortality rate was high? When our life expectancy was short? Before blood pressure medication? Before ambulances could speed you to the emergency room? When the doctor had to ride for miles in the snow to get to you? When the cure for a cavity was to pull out your tooth, before you died from abscess? Before refrigeration? Before pasteurization(Odwalla juice anyone)? When farmers used untreated animal waste as fertilizer? When pests could wipe out entire crops? When were these marvelous, chemical free, good old days? I don't remember them.

Don't forget deodorant and toothpaste! Those are nice things that come from "evil chemicals".

True, true. But I don't see the advances made with prepared foods as being beneficial to our health. We have pudding that doesn't need to be refrigerated. The same goes for some "milk" products in tetra packs. There are some cookies and snacks that my friends kids eat regularly that my kids won't touch. I have tried some of them and they don't even taste like food. With regards to meals and treats, I say preparing them the old fashioned way (taking the time) is much healthier than some of the preservatives and flavourings and fats that are added to the fast foods that some people live on. And don't get me started on the plastic (chemicals) that we store our food in. All bad, bad, bad for our health and the survival of humans and the world. And no, I am not a granola nutter.

Not to mention that back in my day we had to huff airplane glue, and now every other kid on the block has a meth lab. Ah the wonders of science.

Did I say that aloud?

I remember those "fume" filled days of model building, and also when they introduced the "non-fume" Lemon scented modeling glue that would take forever to cure! All for our safety, I guess...,
As for every other kid having a Meth lab, I guess some these kids are actually learning something in schools today. A little science, a little home ec, a little math, a little economics/business, and maybe, if "we" are a little bit lucky, they will learn a bit about the criminal justice system as well!

Well the left would have you belive that natural foods like milk butter eggs and meat are bad for you and processed foods like soy protein are good.

During the ninteenth century malaria was a major problem in Michigan. It was as big a problem there as in the South.

Not necessarily true, Miss C. A lot of lefties are into Nourishing Traditions which encourages using lard and butter, organ meats and is a loud adversary of processed soy. The difference is that lefties usually prefer their food to come from grass-fed cows that aren't pumped full of antibiotics and veggies that aren't sprayed with DNA-damaging chemicals.

I don't think people with MCS are saying that they have all the answers. I think that maybe they just don't want to have life-threatening seizures or 10-day migraines when someone puts on deodorant.

Could there not be a happy medium?

In my book, anyone who spends a lifetime eating food sprayed with pesticides is asking for cancer when they hit 50-60. Same with people using all those personal care products loaded with chemicals. It's not just a "lefties" issue these days - lots of people from all walks of life are wising up to the danger of chemicals as their children, parents and other loved ones get cancer, MS, Parkinson's, and other serious illnesses. People are making connections and realizing that it's no coincidence.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Just common sense.

Haven't you read all those reports on the 300+ chemicals found in breast milk, fetuses, and young children? No parent would be happy with that news, left or right wing. If you want to ignore the warnings and watch as your child becomes another human guinea pig for the big chemical companies, be my guest. My child won't be.

You need to read my column on how PCB's saved my life from my irresponsible smoking mother. It's better to die of cancer in your 60's than to have your jammy jams go up in flames, with you in them, at the age of 3.
