Though a minority, there is a significant Muslim community in Australia.
It is one thing to market a product so that it sells. Having a successful product with broad appeal is great. It is another thing entirely to be coerced or intimidated to provide a certain product.
Which is it?
Or are you suggesting that the culinary needs of this particular group have been embraced far more than what is warrented by the market?
the sheep ranchers are just jumping on the bandwagon. my ex boyfriend and his wife used to raise goats in central california. they would sell them at auction. he said that you would see an afghan woman in a full burkha standing next to a good old boy with a big belly, cowboy boots and hat and they'd both be bidding on the livestock.
anyway, the australian lamb is marked for sale in the US, so they are marketing it to American Muslims. I don't mean to sound like a localvore but don't we have sheep here we can eat? Why are we shipping meat so far?
It reminds of a story my friend from florida told me about when she worked at Disneyworld. She would make peanut brittle at the park and they would pipe out the smell of it to attract customers, but they would sell them only boxed brittle. They would box up the fresh brittle and send that to Disneyland in California. Same weird stuff going on with the lamb. I also buy spareribs that are from Denmark from time to time.
