Just because the left and right claim that the media is biased against them doesn't mean that one of the claims is not correct.

My Libertarian co-worker's standard answer to my claims of media bias against the right is that the left makes the opposite claim about the media being biased in favor of Bush. Just because two sides make opposite claims, does not mean that the claims cancel each other out. It does not automatically make the media balanced. If one sibling steals the last cookie and when both siblings are confronted by their mother, the guilty child claims no knowledge of what happened to last cookie, and the innocent child also claims no knowledge of the cookie's disappearance, that does not mean that both siblings are telling the truth. One claim is factually correct, one is not.

``The ACLU is making much of the supposed violation of American and temporary resident Muslims' rights. They are terribly worried about the rights of particular Muslims that were planning to engage in acts of wholesale murder against US citizens.''

Evidence, please? If this is a reference to Jose Padilla, there is a maxim in our justice system: innocent until proven guilty.... And you will note that the Admin has abandoned the charge about dirty bombs and such, partly, of course, on ``fruit of the poison tree'' grounds, the charge being the outgrowth of torture.

The maxim innocent until proven guilty is an assinine and unpracticed maxim. They do not arrest people who are presumed innocent, people are arrested because they are presumed guilty. It may remain to be proven in a court of law, whether or not they are guilty, then the guilty clock gets set back to zero again. As for Mr Padilla, I totally disagree with you about his intent. There is clearly proof of his intent to harm Americans. If you read about his activities it is clear that he was up to no good. He was picked up at an airport returning from a trip to Pakistan after a tour of Egypt and Afghanistan, places he is known to have engaged in very odd and fishy activities. If he was truly interested in making a Muslim pilgrimage he would have gone to Mecca like a good Muslim does. Unfortunately, he is not a good Muslim, he is a very bad Muslim and has connections to even worse Muslims. I have not one iota of sympathy for him and I think he is a very stupid and dangerous person. Mentally healthy Puerto Rican youths do not stab people and join death cults run by manaical, woman hating, one eyed Mullahs in the mountains of Pakistan. Ideally he should be kept away from society forever. We will have to agree to disagree on this subject. I wish that you would get your website up, Sir.

Um... What website is that? http://www.la.utexas.edu/~plyon should work just fine. (Well, I can access it, anyway :-)

That would be your homepage Paul. It says that it is under construction. Is it not? Is it up only for the links? Are you going to write a journal or blog about philosophy? Write about music. What will your homepage be about? Just curious.

The under construction bit is there because I haven't added critter pix, for example. I have some software for doing a blog, but I haven't started yet, because I don't know if I can sustain regular posts. Anyway the main web site is under the first link (the classical utilitarianism web site.)

Well, Paul you could put up more critter pics. I put my 18 year old cat to sleep in September. I lost another one the year before at age 17. I miss my kitties. I am enjoying the clean house right now and sleeping through the night without a cat trying balance on my hip. I still miss them though and know that there are a lot of cats that need homes. My cottage is only 420 sq ft and since the cats' smell has worn off, I have a mouse disrespecting me by walking around the house all night. The trouble is we have crazy Nazi cat adoption people that come and make sure that you have screens on all your windows so that if you adopt one of their kitties it will remain indoors. I have no problem as my cats are only indoor cats, but my boss had an argument with one of the cat people and told her he lived in an historic house and that he did not want screens. She then went and had the local hardware store call him to "consult" with him on screens available for French windows. He was royally pissed! I am just afraid that she will see my French windows and demand screens on them. I never open them. It's strange in this day and age that you can be rejected for trying to adopt stray animals, just because you don't have screens. This is probably way more than you ever wanted to know, but you could post more pics of cats. I can live vicariously through you.

Sorry about the heavy-handed cat rescue folks. There is a fine line, I fear, between excluding people who won't provide a proper home for the adopted cat or dog and imposing unreasonable demands on people who will. Also my sympathies about the departed kitties. I lost my elderly Siberian Husky Brandy to cancer around Thanksgiving time last year, so I have recent experience of the pain. I decided to volunteer to be a foster home for Texas Alaskan Malamute Rescue and a Siberian Husky rescue group in Huston (there is no sibe rescue group in Austin, but Husky Haven does sometimes pull dogs from the Austin area shelters, so they may set me up with a foster at some point.) Both TAMR and the Sibe rescue groups are really fussy about things like fences that are at least escape artist resistant (because most Mal's and Sibes, esp. the younger ones, are prone to jumping fences, digging under them, have been known to unlatch unlocked gates, etc.) This, and the insistence by the rescue groups that both breeds be kept on lead whenever not inside or in a reasonably secure fenced area, may seem unreasonable to the prospective adopters, but in this case the rescue groups know what they are about: too many Mals or Sibes have ended up dead after being hit by a car, or ended up lost and in rescue again, because their human(s) did not take proper precautions. TAMR came up with a young female mal out of an Austin area shelter for me, and I have already encountered this trouble when she managed to pull out of her harness and took off around a building in the Apt complex I live in. After a few moments of panic I encountered her, called her, and was lucky enough to have her come. I praised her vigorously and patted her whilst I put the harness back on her.

In any case, in pursuit of a cat to adopt, you might try Retired Friends. These are mostly retired show kitties or pet quality cats that the catteries who offer them for adoption are not in a position to keep. The adoption fee is apt to be somewhat larger, but you will be getting a pure-bred cat. Judging by the listings I have looked at in the past, there are a number of catteries in your area with kitties up for adoption. Unless you have been to a cat show or having been doing some reading on the subject, you will be surprised at the variety of cat breeds, I suspect. If you want a traditional cat, go to the breed listing and look under American Shorthair, or if you prefer long hair, Maine Coon. If you want a really playful cat, consider a Burmese. And so it goes. There are links on each breed page to breed descriptions.

Thanks Paul. I will check into it. I love the way Burmese look and have heard that they have great personalities. I probaly can't afford one though. We have a Malamute, named Zima, here in my cottage complex and a Rottweiler and a Dalmation and a Pit Bull and an American Bull Dog and a lot of cats. I have fox terrier mix. He loved his cats and I think if I get a short hair he will like it best. I have time to look for the right cat, one that will fit in with the dog. The cat will need a cheeky and outgoing personality.
