"Stranger" is a funny word. It has a hard "A" but no "i" to make it sound this way like the word "Strain". You may say it is do to the single consenant after the "A" like with the word "Ranger", and that it is like this because it also has an "e" in it. But what about the word "Anger"? We do not pronounce it "Ainger" do we? Unless, of course your regional accent causes you to sound like yer' saying it this way of course.
