My friend's father
My friend grew up in Oklahoma. Her father came to America, from China, in the 40's. When he landed at the airport, he had to use a public restroom. He saw that that one side had a sign that said, "For Whites Only." The other side said, simply, "Coloreds." My friend's father, being Chinese, wasn't sure which side he was supposed to use, so he erred on the side of caution and used the side for the coloreds.

When I was a kid(45 years ago) there was "white" and "colored" water fountains at J.C. Pennys.
My mother never told me which one to use but I learened to read at a young age and knew.
But I still can't spell.
"learened"
I accept learened, it works for me. I knew exactly what you were intending to say and that's what counts!
And you are still a kid!
In heart my dear ... only in my heart ... the rest has grown old ;)
OK a little off topic, but my mother had a guest once while she was studying in Paris who mistakenly used the bidet as a toilet for number 2. He didn't know what it was :)
Leilouta, Uh Oh!!! Number 2 in the bidet. How embarrassng if he ever found out his mistake and messy for your mother!
Jack we may be chronologically old, but we can still be immature!
I remember there was a big debate in Dallas, TX about ripping out one of the old water fountains that was labeled "Colored Only."
Most black people were very upset, but a few them made sense to me. Let's not ignore the past, let's use it to learn from it. Erasing the marks of history does not mean that it didn't happen.
BTW - here in Bozeman there are a few places that have the restrooms labeled "Either" and "Or"
Trips first-timers up pretty good. :-)
Well, Brad, educate us. Who is "Either" and who is "Or" You wouldn't let your blog friends make asses of themselves, would you??
Yes, SF there were 4 bathrooms.
When I was in the 10th grade in Texas (small town), there was one movie theatre. The caucasians sat on one side and the african americans sat on the other. There was no mingling. There was no talking even at school, and this was only about 15 yrs ago.
Tooners, that still happens here in the inner city. People often segregate themselves.
